Scratch Resistance

Some of our lenses are scratch resistant. Although no lens is scratch proof... a scratch resistant lens can withstand the wear and tear of daily use without hazing. Hazing is a common occurrence of lenses that are not scratch resistant. Simply placing a pair of unprotected sunglasses in a purse or on the dashboard of a car can lead to many tiny, barely noticeable scratches. The cumulative affect of thousands of minute scratches is called hazing. The lenses begin to lose the ability to deliver crisp, sharp viewing, as the surface of the lens has been clouded with tiny scratches.

Scratch resistant lenses have a special coating on both sides of the lens. This coating is designed to prevent the surface of the lens from absorbing scratches. The benefit of having a scratch resistant lens is that the life span of the sunglass is increased. Lenses that are not scratch resistant can perform perfectly for many years, but care must be taken to always place them in a protective pouch or case.
